People’s personal information, including Social Security and driver’s license numbers, may have been compromised, the city announced.
MCKINNEY, Texas — McKinney announced this week that a data breach compromised people’s personal information last year.
The breach may have impacted Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, credit card information, financial account information, and certain medical/health insurance information. The breach may have impacted up to 18,000 people, the Dallas Morning News reported.
“Privacy and security are our top priorities,” the city said in a press release. “We deeply regret that this incident occurred and will continue to implement the most stringent security protocols available to prevent incidents like this one in the future.”
The data was accessed by an unknown third party Oct. 31, 2024, the city said. The breach was detected on Nov. 14, 2024, and the city immediately severed any unauthorized activity, the release states. When they discovered the issue, the city discovered certain files may have been exposed and began to review the files to determine if any sensitive information was compromised, the release states.
On Dec. 30, the city learned personal information may have been exposed, officials said. The city mailed notices to individuals who may have been impacted by the breach, the release states.
The city is unaware of any actual or attempted misuse of any personal information, the release states. McKinney will provide victims of the breach one-year free credit monitoring and identity theft protection through TransUnion and Cyberscout, according to the release.
