A horse that was pulling the chuckwagon also went down and was removed from the arena, officials said.
FORT WORTH, Texas — A driver in the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo’s Chuckwagon racing contest was hospitalized and a horse was removed from the arena after a chuckwagon tipped over during the race in a harrowing moment Friday.
Chuckwagon driver Reed Rosencrans was injured during the incident, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) said in a statement.
Dr. Jason Mogonye, co-medical director of JustinSports Medicine, said Friday that Rosencrans was alert and taken to the hospital for further testing, according to the statement.
The Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo said it was later determined Rosencrans suffered muscle injuries to his shoulder.
The PRCA says one of the horses that was pulling the chuckwagon also went down and was removed from the arena, but was examined by on-site veterinarians, didn’t sustain any serious injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.
“We are grateful for the professional response of our medical and veterinary teams, and we send our thoughts and best wishes to Reed and his family,” the PRCA said in their statement.
The PRCA noted that chuckwagon racing isn’t an official PRCA rodeo event, but is a “popular tradition at the Fort Worth Stock Show.”
“The Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo is grateful for the amazing medical and veterinary teams who exhibited quick action rendering aid to both Rosencrans and the horse and express our best wishes to Rosencrans for a speedy recovery,” the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo said in a statement.
