Although he never dreamed of becoming mayor, Pace’s community saw potential for something bigger that he didn’t see in himself.
HENDERSON, Texas — In Henderson, one man’s journey as a trailblazer highlights the progress the city has made — and the milestones still ahead. Henry Pace is the city’s first African American mayor.
Henderson has a rich history spanning 182 years, marked by many milestones along the way. And now, the city is celebrating another historic first.
“And to be the first Black mayor, it’s an honor, and I want to do the best that I can to put my best foot forward for the citizens,” Pace said.
For Pace, being a trailblazer isn’t new — he’s been breaking barriers for decades.
“Being the first, I started out in elementary school back in 1966. I was the first Black student at the elementary school,” Pace said.
He’s also no stranger to leadership. Before taking office, he served three terms on the city council.
“It is quite an honor to step into this role in my life at this time,” he said.
Although he never dreamed of becoming mayor, Pace’s community saw potential for something bigger that he didn’t see in himself.
“I was teaching and coaching at the middle school, and I went back, and Ms. McManus, I was telling her about it, she said, ‘Oh, you’ll do fine. You’ll run for three terms. In your first fourth term, you will be the mayor.’ And how she knew that, I do not know,” Pace said.
Now, as mayor, he’s focused on listening to his community and making a lasting impact.
“I’m glad to talk with anybody concerning their matters to make the citizens’ lives better here in Henderson,” Pace said.
