CPS Energy ordered to pay $109 million for 2021 home explosion

SAN ANTONIO – A Bexar County jury found CPS Energy negligent on Monday for a 2021 explosion at an East Side home that injured two people, ordering the municipality to pay damages totaling more than $100 million.

Virginia Rymers and her son Robert sued the city-owned municipality after an explosion at their home on Walters Street in 2021.

The San Antonio Fire Department determined that the cause of the explosion was a fire that started from a ruptured gas line.

Robert Rymers was trapped and had to be pulled from the home. He suffered severe burns from the fire. Virginia Rymers was also injured in the blast.

In a statement to KSAT, CPS Energy said, “We continue to dispute liability and are evaluating our next steps.”
