SAN ANTONIO – A man accused of fatally shooting his brother in Leon Valley in 2021 was given an eight-year prison sentence as part of a plea deal.
Darren Doze was initially charged with murder but was sentenced on a lesser charge of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. He also had a separate assault family charge that was likely dismissed as part of the plea deal on Tuesday.

Doze was arrested on suspicion of assault on a pregnant person and family violence assault in 2021. It was Doze’s second domestic violence incident, Bexar County court records showed.
Doze, who was arrested in May 2021 after he allegedly shot his brother, was out on bail for the murder charge when he was arrested. which violated his bond conditions. As a result, his bond was remanded.
On May 2, 2021, Leon Valley police responded to a shooting call at the Vista Del Rey apartments at 5622 Evers Road, according to Doze’s murder affidavit. Police found Ronald Doze, 39, bleeding from a gunshot wound to his upper thigh.
When police asked Ronald Doze who shot him, he responded, “My brother,” according to the affidavit. He was rushed to the hospital but died later that day.
A witness later told police that the shooting happened in her apartment, where Ronald Doze also lived. She told officers that she went to bed around 3 a.m. while Ronald Doze was drinking with Darren Doze and an unknown woman.
The witness was awakened hours later by Ronald Doze shouting to her to call police. She then heard a gunshot, according to the affidavit.
When she ran to the kitchen, she saw Ronald Doze shot as his brother was fleeing the apartment with a rifle, she told police.
Darren Doze apologized to the woman for the shooting in her apartment, telling her that Ronald made “unwanted passes” at the other woman, according to the affidavit.
Leon Valley police arrested Darren Doze days later, on May 7, 2021, with the help of the U.S. Marshals.
