Affidavit reveals new details of North Texas shooting near middle school

A 19-year-old has been charged with capital murder in the shooting.

FORNEY, Texas — One person has been charged with capital murder after a man was killed and another was injured in a shooting last week near Brown Middle School in Kaufman County, an affidavit obtained by WFAA showed.

According to the affidavit, 19-year-old Artinamas Dequann Searcy was charged with capital murder.

Police responded to the shooting shortly before 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, in the 2000 block of Chisholm Trail in Forney. Upon arrival, they found one man dead with a gunshot wound to the middle of his back, the affidavit stated. They also found two men in a white sedan, and the passenger had a gunshot wound to his head.

Searcy was soon found on Reeder Road, according to the affidavit, who matched the description of a man reported to have run from the area.

While talking with police, the affidavit said, Searcy told them he and the man who died, Caden Rider, had left a friend’s house to meet someone Rider wanted to see. Searcy reportedly said he thought Rider wanted to buy some cannabis but wasn’t sure. He said they waited at the residence for a few minutes before the white Sedan pulled up with Rider and the passenger.

Searcy told police he walked up to the passenger because he recognized him and greeted him, the affidavit said, then he heard Rider shoot a gun. This is when Searcy said he ran away, and that he was the only person at the scene without a gun. He also said he didn’t now beforehand that Rider planned on shooting anyone.

The affidavit said Searcy told police he believes now that Rider intended to rob the men in the sedan.

According to the document, surveillance footage showed Caden and Searcy walk up to the sedan, and Searcy appears to either shake hands with the passenger or give him something. The driver reportedly appears to flash money at Rider  at which point, Rider reportedly walks over to the passenger side, pulls out a gun and points it at the driver.

The driver reportedly appears to duck down as Rider fires, shooting the passenger in the face, the affidavit states. The driver reportedly shoots back at Rider several times, striking him in the back.

According to the affidavit, Searcy reportedly is seen looking at the gun and “appears to know what is going on.” He can reportedly be seen running away shortly after the first shot is fired.

The driver, Antonio Gladney, was interviewed by police, the affidavit detailed, and admitted to shooting Rider.
