Torrez’s friend, who is Guevara’s ex-girlfriend, said she was celebrating Torrez’s birthday when Guevara shot Torrez multiple times and then walked out of the home.
TYLER, Texas — A Tyler man was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday for killing his ex-girlfriend’s friend during a birthday celebration.
Melvin Orlando Guevara, Jr., 22, was found guilty of capital murder following a jury trial this week for the death of Kelly Eduardo Torrez, 22, of Tyler. He was then sentenced to life in prison without parole, according to Smith County judicial records.
Torrez died on June 30, 2024, after a shooting at a home on County Road 4136 in Smith County. Arrest documents say Torrez’s friend, who is Guevara’s ex-girlfriend, said she was celebrating Torrez’s birthday when Guevara shot Torrez multiple times and then walked out of the home.
Guevara was later pulled over in the area of Highway 31 East and Loop 323 and arrested for Torrez’s death.
