Texas ranks among top states using ChatGPT to write school essays

In today’s day and age, if you’re a student with a big paper due, it might be tempting to crack open and artificial intelligence service, such as ChatGPT, and use the power of AI to churn out a fully written product in a matter of minutes.

Students can use AI to gather information but should proofread calculations for errors. A recent study by EssayShark analyzed Google search data over the past year for terms related to using artificial intelligence tools to write essays. The analysis included 30 search terms, such as “AI essay writer” and “how to use AI for essays,” to determine which states have students seeking quick and easy essay solutions.

While the ethics of these methods are questionable, it’s hard to deny the convenience of a service that will spit out content in an instant that would otherwise take hours to write. If you’re a student in the Lone Star State, data from a recent study suggests that you may have tried this before!

EssayShark’s study revealed that students in Texas were the second most likely among U.S. states to use ChatGPT for essay writing, with 21.10 average monthly searches per 100,000 people. The state has 226 institutions, with popular majors in business, healthcare, and engineering.

Mississippi topped the list, ranking just ahead of Texas with 21.46 monthly searches per 100,000 people. The rest of the top 10 were Georgia (20.79), Louisiana (19.90), West Virginia (19.77), Florida (18.79), Nevada (17.71), Hawaii (17.65), South Carolina (17.20) and New York (16.96).

“Students are bombarded with information and homework every day, making time one of the most precious commodities in college life,” Frederick Poche, the CMO at EssayShark said. “As busy as they are, turning to artificial intelligence to help them efficiently complete work seems like a no-brainer.”

Poche emphasizes that AI should be used as an assistant, not to write full essays. Overuse can lead to a loss of critical thinking and research skills, and AI-generated content can raise plagiarism concerns.

“Artificial intelligence has its place as a support mechanism for writers, but the time taken to refine a generated essay would be better utilized to using your own thoughts and research to create a stronger piece of work,” Poche added.
