Previous police reports allege violence against women by Dallas Mavericks Assistant Coach Darrel Armstrong

Armstrong was arrested over the weekend for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, police say.

DALLAS — Dallas Mavericks Assistant Coach Darrell Armstrong was charged over the weekend with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a woman, police say, but this is not the first reported incident involving Armstrong and women.

Police records show an incident was reported in 2019 at the same apartment building where Armstrong was recently arrested, 1001 Ross Ave. In January 2019, a woman had called police and reportedly would only tell them “he smashed my head on the floor.”

According to the report, officers couldn’t see any injuries to the woman. She told police she was across the street when Armstrong reportedly hit her head on the floor and wanted her phone back from inside the apartment.

Police at the time reached Armstrong, the report states, who told police the woman was at his apartment with several friends when she began arguing and causing “drama.” Armstrong told police he told her she needed to leave and that she began punching him in the face before he forced her out and called security. He told police at the time he didn’t want to file any report.

Armstrong was arrested in July 2003 on charges of battery of a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest after he was accused of fighting a female cop outside an Orlando nightclub, the Associated Press reported at the time.

AP reported at the time that he stood in traffic upset after being denied a ride from a full taxi outside the club, and when the officer tried to get him out of the street, he was accused of briefly scuffling with her and other officers, then was arrested.

The officer’s left middle and ring fingers were reportedly sprained from the incident, AP reported.

“It was just an unfortunate accident that probably should’ve never happened on both parts,” Armstrong said at the time.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, the case was later thrown out of court.

Police records show Armstrong was a witness in a violent incident that was reported in April 2022 at the 1001 Ross Ave. apartment building.
