LIST: Several North Texas school districts cancel, delay events due to weather

 

Dangerous cold and the potential for a wintry mix have caused several school districts to delay and, in some cases, cancel events this week.

DALLAS — Several North Texas school districts decided to delay or cancel after-school activities this week due to dangerously cold weather. 

From Tuesday, Feb. 18 through Thursday, Feb. 20, WFAA has issued Weather Alert Days as an Arctic Blast brings in potential for a wintry mix. The weather could cause slick spots on the roads Tuesday night into Wednesday. Lows are expected to be in the single digits and teens with wind chills below zero degrees. 

To get ahead of this, school districts in the area are taking precautions Tuesday. Here’s a list of districts that have delayed or canceled after-school events this week. 

LIST: School districts that have delayed or canceled after-school activities 

  • Aledo ISD
    • Moved the men’s basketball bi-district playoff game against Denton to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at Keller Central High School 
    • Moved the women’s playoff game against Tascosa to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb 18 at Haskell High School. 
  • Dallas ISD
    • Canceled all athletic outdoor activities and events from through Thursday, Feb. 20.
    • Moved playoff basketball games to 6 p.m. Tuesday, except for Thomas Jefferson vs. Seagoville, which is set for 6: 30 p.m. 
  • DeSoto ISD
    • Canceled all afterschool activities Tuesday.
  • Duncanville ISD
    • Announced no activities will begin after 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
    • Rescheduled board meeting to Monday, Feb. 24 at 6:30 p.m. 
  • Garland ISD
    • Moved North Garland’s playoff basketball game to 6 p.m. Tuesday. 
  • Grapevine-Colleyville ISD
    • Canceled middle school track meets and tennis matches this week.
    • Moved the bi-district playoff basketball game between Colleyville Heritage and Brewer High School to 6 p.m. at Byron Nelson High School. 
  • Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD
    • Moved the playoff basketball game between L.D. Bell and Mansfield Lake Ridge to 6 p.m. Tuesday. 
  • Irving ISD
    • Canceled all outdoor events Tuesday. 
  • Mansfield ISD
    • Moved the playoff basketball game between L.D. Bell and Mansfield Lake Ridge to 6 p.m. Tuesday. 
  • Muenster ISD
    • Moved the bi-district playoff basketball game between Muenster and Bland to 4 p.m. Tuesday. 
    • Canceled softball and baseball games Thursday, Feb. 20. 
  • Rains ISD
    • Moved the playoff basketball game between Rains and Pottsboro to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
  • Richardson ISD
    • Canceled all outdoor athletic games and activities through Thursday, Feb. 20. 
  • Sunnyvale ISD
    • Moved the playoff basketball game between Sunnyvale and Pleasant Grove to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday
  • White Settlement ISD
    • Moved the boy’s bi-district playoff basketball game to 6 p.m. Tuesday
    • Moved the girl’s basketball playoff game to 6 p.m. Tuesday
    • Canceled softball games Tuesday.

In addition to these cancellations, two North Texas school districts have announced delays and closures to campuses on Wednesday. Jacksboro ISD said it will open at 10 a.m. and PTAA-Greenville said it will be closed Wednesday.
