Sprinkler system failure leads to major water leak at Dallas’ NorthPark Center

A broken sprinkler head triggered a waterfall-like leak at NorthPark Center near the food court.

DALLAS — Many North Texans probably remember spending times as a kid at NorthPark Center’s duck pond, and on Wednesday, the mall inadvertently added a new water feature.

Witness video from the mall showed pressurized water pouring down from the ceiling like a waterfall and pooling on the floor below as alarms rang and flashed in the background. The leak happened near the food court atrium on the ceiling directly outside the Banana Republic and Zara.

WFAA reached out to NorthPark officials, who said that a broken sprinkler head triggered the fire alarm. It’s unclear what caused the sprinkler to break, but Dallas Fire-Rescue said that the freezing temperatures caused the sprinkler system to fail, resulting in the deluge from above.

It’s also unclear how much, if any, damage the broken sprinkler system caused.

As for NorthPark’s newest water feature, mall officials said the problem has since been resolved.
