DALLAS — As North Texas bids farewell to one of its greatest basketball stars, a vibrant mural dedicated to former Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Dončić was unveiled Friday, just in time for his 26th birthday.
The mural, spearheaded by Fort Worth-based artist Juan Velazquez, has become an emotional symbol for fans who watched him lead the Mavs to several unforgettable moments.
Days after Dončić was traded to the LA Lakers, Velazquez posted on Instagram about creating a “goodbye Luka mural.” He showed the finished product on his Instagram page on Friday, Feb. 28, Dončić’s birthday.
The mural features the 26-year-old Slovenian in a Mavs jersey, the phrase “Luka Magic,” and the number 77 layered on top of the Downtown Dallas skyline.
The piece is located in the Trinity Groves neighborhood along Singleton Boulevard and is expected to attract fans and visitors stopping by to mark the end of an era.
Velazquez is known for his elaborate murals and has painted dozens of murals across the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.
Dončić brought numerous accolades, including multiple All-Star selections, leading the Mavs to the NBA finals last year and a reputation for his clutch performances in high-stakes games.
While the city now turns its attention to the future of the Mavs, this mural stands as a reminder of the unforgettable legacy left by Dončić in Dallas.
