No. 2 Texas notches 20th win of the season with 10th run-rule victory

AUSTIN (KXAN) — It’s two days into March and the Texas Longhorns have already won 20 games.

The No. 2 Longhorns capped a perfect 5-0 weekend in the Longhorn Invitational with a pair of run-rule wins over South Florida 9-1 and Alabama A&M 8-0 on Sunday at McCombs Field.

Texas beat South Florida and Abliene Christian 9-5 and 9-1 on Friday and New Mexico State 5-2 on Saturday.

Mac Morgan threw a one-hitter against Alabama A&M with four strikeouts, a walk and seven ground ball outs. Ashton Maloney and Mia Scott had two hits apiece and Reese Atwood hammered her seventh home run of the season, a 2-run shot in the first inning, giving Texas a 3-1 lead.

The Longhorns drew eight walks against the Bulldogs, something head coach Mike White was pleased about.

“I thought the discipline at the plate was really good today,” he said. “We were doing a good job of making the opposing pitchers have to make pitches, so it was good to see that.”

Atwood homered against the Bulls in the opener and had three RBIs. Kayden Henry had two hits to lead the Texas attack.

Tegan Kavan allowed a run on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks against the Bulls to earn her sixth win.

The Longhorns (20-1) host Baylor at 6 p.m. Wednesday before heading to Columbus, Ohio for their final nonconference tournament.
