The NCA cheer competition won’t return to Dallas next year, but not because of this weekend’s incident

Last weekend, the event was thrown into chaos after a shooting scare prompted a mass evacuation from the Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center.

DALLAS — A chaotic weekend in Dallas marked the last time the NCA All-Star Championship would be held at the Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center, at least for now.

Even before a shooting scare prompted mass evacuations from the downtown convention center, Varsity Brands, which runs the NCA All-Star National Championship, planned to temporarily relocate the competition to Houston. Last weekend marked the competition’s 30th year at the convention center.

The competition draws 1,712 teams with 30,410 athletes and 3,700 coaches from 43 states and nine countries, WFAA previously reported . The 2025 event was the largest in the championship’s history and generated an estimated $64 million in economic impact, according to the Dallas Sports Commission.

The event will be held at the George R. Brown Convention Center and Toyota Center in Houston for 2026, 2027 and 2028, according to Varsity Brands. The relocation was prompted by construction caused by the planned expansion of the Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center, Varsity Brands said in a statement.

The organizer previously said they hope to return to Dallas when the convention center renovation is complete.

Several people were injured in the rush to evacuate the convention center Saturday. Ten people were taken to the hospital, officials said. None of the injuries were life-threatening and ranged in severity from bruising to fractures, the statement reads.

A fight among parents, not a shooting, led to the panicked evacuation, WFAA previously reported. Dallas police sources told WFAA there were no shots fired and there was not an active shooter.

The competition was canceled on Saturday and resumed 8 a.m. Sunday. Varsity Brands worked with Dallas police to implement an increased police presence.
