HOUSTON — Family, friends and colleagues will say their final goodbyes to Congressman and former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner on Saturday, March 15.
The funeral service will cap a week of emotional events to honor Turner, 70, who died on March 5 at his home in Washington, D.C., from what his family described as “enduring health complications.”

On Tuesday, hundreds of Houstonians lined up at City Hall where the two-term mayor lay in state. Many shared fond memories of Turner and explained why he was so loved.
On Thursday, former colleagues paid tribute to Turner as he lay in honor at the Texas State Capitol in Austin, where he served as state representative from 2016 to 2024.

The final farewell to Turner will take place with a funeral service at The Church Without Walls in Houston.

According to Turner’s obituary, his pallbearers will be members of his former security detail, including officers Jack Bailey, Myron Brady, Will Laster, Ingrid Pinzon, Paul Powell and Rodney Tyler.
The public was invited to attend the funeral, but the church released a statement saying that they had reached capacity for the service.
“Due to the overwhelming response of those who want to pay tribute and attend the funeral service for Congressman Sylvester Turner, we have surpassed the allowed capacity in both the main sanctuary and chapel. We regret to have to discontinue the link at this time.”
Doors will open at 11 a.m. on Saturday and there will be limited reserved seating for delegations; others will be open seating.
Those who attend are asked to wear blue in Turner’s honor.
Turner’s burial will be private.
