At this point, the slow growth of Dallas County is not surprising.
While it remains the eighth-most-populous county in the country, Dallas County grew about 0.8% from mid-2023 to mid-2024, translating to an estimated 19,774 new residents, according to recently released U.S. Census Bureau data . In contrast, Collin and Tarrant counties experienced 3.9% and 1.5% growth, respectively. Collin County added 46,694 residents while Tarrant County grew by an estimated 32,793 people.
Texas’ population climbed 1.8% in 2023-24, meaning both Dallas and Tarrant counties lagged behind the statewide figure. Dallas County’s population reached nearly 2.66 million last year, according to the Census Bureau estimates.
What specifically amplifies this national trend in North Texas is the region’s strong ability to build new communities on raw land. The area doesn’t have physical barriers like mountains or rivers stopping its outward growth. Suburban areas in the greater DFW region are also eager to grow and offer a friendly environment and cheaper land to developers aiming to build in the area.
