BREAKING NEWS: Skunk tests positive for rabies captured near home

VICTORIA, Texas – The Victoria County Animal Services captured a skunk that tested positive for rabies on Monday afternoon near a home on Burkhart Road.

Rabies was confirmed after authorities sent the skunk for testing to the Texas Department of State Health Services lab in Austin.

There are currently no reported exposures to humans or domestic animals.

The county is reminding residents to make sure their pets’ rabies vaccination is up to date and to keep pets on their property.

Texas law mandates that dogs and cats receive a rabies vaccination from a licensed veterinarian by the age of 4 months.

This is the first confirmed rabies case in the southern part of Victoria County, said Lauren Meaux, Victoria County public safety communications coordinator.

Wildlife showing signs of rabies may be active during the day despite being nocturnal, display aggression or disorientation, drool excessively, or exhibit lameness.

Anyone who sees suspicious wildlife behavior should leave the animal alone and report it to Victoria County Animal Services at 361-578-3564.
