A Conservative Says ‘School Choice’ Is Not The Only Option | KTRH Local Houston and Texas News

With ‘School Choice’ set to be a major item on the agenda for the upcoming legislative session, there are some conservatives who are speaking out against it over concerns about how it will affect public schools.

Sherry Sylvester is a distinguished senior fellow with the Texas Public Policy Foundation, and she believes that School Choice, is the best choice.

“Conservatives, what we’re looking for here is freedom for parents to choose the best school for their child” Sylvester said, “Public school is a good setting for one kid, not the best for another kid. So, you would have that kind of option.”

But you can’t have those options, if you don’t have a choice. And as for the fears of what happens to public schools? The data shows that here in Texas, school choice has had just the opposite effect.

“The school systems have risen up, responded to the competition, made themselves even stronger so that parents will choose to send their kids there” Sylvester told KTRH, “That’s always been the theory of school choice.”

Now it’s up to Texas lawmakers to make the right choice for parents.

“The sky is really the limit in terms of what we can do, in terms of education innovation” noted Sylvester.
