Dallas County Health and Human Services did not release the person’s name.

DALLAS COUNTY, Texas — Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) reported the second West Nile Virus death in Dallas County for the 2024 season on Wednesday.

According to DCHHS, the patient who died was a man who had underlying health conditions and lived in the 75080 zip code.

DCHHS said due to confidentiality reasons it will not release any additional information about the man.

“We are deeply saddened by this loss,” Director of DCHHS Dr. Philip Huang said in a press release. “This death underscores the critical importance of safeguarding against mosquito bites, which can transmit several diseases including WNV. Mosquito activity is decreasing in Dallas County, but it is still important to follow the Four Ds.”

The Four Ds that Huang refers to represent the following:

  • DEET: Use bug repellants containing the active ingredient DEET and follow label instructions.
  • DRESS: Wear long, loose and light-colored clothing.
  • DRAIN: Drain any standing water in or around your home or workplace.
  • DUSK to DAWN: As mosquitos are most active from dusk to dawn, limit your time outdoors during this time.

The first death in Dallas County due to West Nile Virus occurred in August when a woman, who also had underlying health conditions, died after being diagnosed with the virus. According to DCHHS, the woman lived in North Dallas.
