MCKINNEY, Texas — The McKinney Independent School District is rolling out an open enrollment plan for students who live outside of the district or students who live in the district but want to transfer to another school.
The plan has several qualifying factors and not all transfers will be accepted, according to the district, which announced the “Choose McKinney ISD” initiative Tuesday.
Specifically, the open enrollment is for Kindergarten-8th Grade students, for now. Students can begin applying for transfers on Feb. 3, and then the district will let them know when their application has been reviewed and approved.
The district says it will accept transfers to campuses until a campus reaches its capacity. Approval is on a first-come, first-served basis, and if an application isn’t accepted, the student will be placed on a waitlist.
For students looking to transfer into the McKinney school district — and currently live outside of the district — a few requirements are needed:
- Texas residency
- Attendance of 90% or better in the prior academic year
- No expulsions or alternative education placement in the prior academic year
- Passing grades in all subjects and satisfactory standardized test scores
- No additional staffing or resources required at the requested campus
Again, the transfers for both within the district and students transferring into the district will be limited to Kindergarten-8th Grade for the 2025-2026 school year. Check the full list of eligible campuses here.
The district plans to roll out transfers for the high school level ahead of the 2026-2027 school year.
The nearby Frisco Independent School District in November announced a similar open enrollment plan.
