AUSTIN (KXAN) — On Tuesday, the Austin Police Department confirmed the body pulled from Lady Bird Lake Monday night was missing man Jason John, 30, according to an APD news release.
John was reported as a missing person Feb. 5 and was last seen walking on Rainey Street near Lady Bird Lake, according to police.
The victim’s family, as well as Mayor Kirk Watson and District 9 Council Member Zo Qadri, expressed concerns about the lighting along the trails near the lake. Watson and Qadri plan to meet with The Trail Conservancy Thursday to discuss the matter further.
APD’s Homicide and Missing Persons Unit detectives, along with crime scene specialists, responded to the scene and were able to identify John, the release said.
John’s family recently held a vigil for him Feb. 11, and a flyer for the vigil stated that John “is presumed to have drowned in Lady Bird Lake.”
Surrounded by dozens of family and friends, John’s mother, father, and brothers sang hymns and shared special memories of John at a vigil over the weekend.
The incident remained under investigation Tuesday, police said.
