‘Apocalyptic’: Mavs’ Luka Doncic trade sparks outrage across two continents

The controversial trade of the 25-year-old superstar has ignited unprecedented criticism of Mavericks management

DALLAS — The quick removal of Luka Doncic’s banner from the American Airlines Center on Monday symbolized more than just a roster change for the Dallas Mavericks — it marked the start of fierce backlash that has reverberated from Texas to Slovenia.

The controversial trade of the 25-year-old superstar has ignited unprecedented criticism of Mavericks management, with fans and media personalities voicing their frustration across multiple platforms.

Local sports radio station 105.3 The Fan was flooded with calls from angry supporters Monday night.

“We just gave away a 25-year-old face of our franchise just coming into his prime for a guy who’s 32 in the decline of his career,” said one caller, comparing the team’s new acquisition to “a McDonald’s ice cream machine” in terms of reliability.

The impact of the trade extends far beyond Dallas. In Slovenia, Doncic’s home country, the news has dominated national headlines and sparked intense emotional reactions from his loyal fanbase.

“It’s like an apocalyptic thing. I’m not exaggerating right now,” said Gregor Sevsek, a prominent Luka and Mavericks fan in Slovenia. “We felt that Luka has been loved in Dallas. And right now, we kind of hate the organization.”

The trade, which ESPN reports was first discussed by Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison at an Ascension Coffee shop near Dallas’s Crescent Hotel, has particularly stung Slovenian fans who appreciated the strong connection between Doncic and Dallas supporters.

“I feel so sorry about the Dallas fans because they have been so great to Luka,” Sevsek added. “They showed so much love through the seven years he’s been there. This is like a knife stuck to our hearts.”
