SAN FRANCISCO — Monday is a federal holiday in the U.S. known as Inauguration Day.
It’s when the president-elect and vice president-elect are sworn in and take office to officially start their terms.
Inauguration Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day will both fall on Monday, Jan. 20 this year. Both are recognized as federal holidays, but since they land on the same day, there will still only be 11 paid days off for federal workers.
Because there are two federal holidays Monday, you might want to check what’s open before running your errands.
Several important offices will be closed Monday, Jan. 20, 2025 in observance of the two federal holidays. Here’s a look at what you can expect.
Are banks open on Inauguration Day 2025?
As a Federal Reserve bank holiday, most banks will be closed Monday, Jan. 20, 2025. US Bank, Bank of America, Chase, Citibank, Capital One, PNC Bank, Santander Bank, TD Bank, Truist and Wells Fargo branches will be closed.
You can still utilize online banking and ATM services. As always, be sure to check with local branches for hours on specific locations.
Is the post office open on Inauguration Day?
All United States Post Offices will be closed and mail will not be delivered Monday.
UPS will be closed Monday but FedEx locations will be open. Some services may experience a delay due to the holiday.
Federal government offices
All federal offices will be closed, including federal courts.
State and local government offices
No matter which day your state celebrates, Jan. 20 is considered a state holiday as well, meaning state offices will also be closed. That includes things like DMVs.
Some local municipalities may remain open, or may have some offices open in a limited capacity. Check with your local government offices first to make sure they’re open, or head over on Tuesday instead.
Stock market
The New York Stock Exchange observes U.S. holidays, so the stock market will be closed Monday.
Grocery stores and other retail outlets — Is Costco open on Inauguration Day? Is Walmart open on Inauguration Day?
Major retailers, including national stores such as Traget and Walmart, will be open Monday as the president-elect is officially starts his term.
Grocery stores and pharmacies, like Costco, Safeway or CVS, will also be open.
Be sure to check with your local stores, as they may have adjusted hours.
