Arlington High School briefly placed on lockdown because of police incident off campus, officials say

The school was placed on lockdown for more than an hour as police said they were investigating a report of someone with a weapon at a business north of campus.

ARLINGTON, Texas — Arlington High School was placed on lockdown for a little more than an hour Wednesday as a precaution because of police activity nearby, according to Arlington ISD. All students and staff members are safe.

Dismissal was briefly delayed as a result of the lockdown, according to the district.

Officers responded to a restaurant in the 1300 block of Cooper Street at about 2 p.m. to investigate reports that someone displayed a gun, and witnesses told dispatchers that the suspect left the restaurant heading south along Cooper Street, Arlington police say.

“Because Arlington High School is right there, the school was temporarily placed on lockdown as a precaution,” Arlington police said in a statement. “Officers searched the area and located an individual who matched the suspect description. They did not find a weapon on him.”

The lockdown was lifted after officers determined there was no potential threat near the school, police say.

The brief lockdown at Arlington High School came a week after an 18-year-old male student was fatally shot outside Bowie High School in Arlington ISD.
