AT&T customers ‘stuck on SOS’ as disaster teams deployed amid Hurricane Beryl

   

Cell phone service company AT&T is reporting outages for hundreds of customers, many in the Texas area.

Outages are reported in: Houston, Dallas, Austin, Chicago, Oklahoma City, Atlanta, San Antonio, Reedly, and Los Angeles. About 40 percent of those customers reporting outages say that their internet or landline is out, while another 40 percent say it’s their cell phone.

AT&T’s Twitter has been flooded with messages from users demanding help and service restoration as the company’s social media rep scrambles to get all their details down.

According to KTRH, a local radio station, “Network Disaster Response Teams have been deployed, along with technicians, & supporting equipment strategically staged in several Southeast Texas cities. Once it’s safe, our teams will begin assessing the damage & will work to ensure customers are connected asap.”

A few businesses also left comments on DownDetector.com , stating that their servers are down in their offices and they’re left unable to work. Others report not being able to access anything, including mobile internet, from their cell phones.

Houston and Austin are also currently being battered by Hurricane Beryl, which has already left about 2 million Texans without electrical power. Some of these citizens may not have cell phone service either.

Users took to Twitter to yell at the company: “Every time there is a weather crisis, AT&T fails me. I shouldn’t have to keep turning my phone on & off and on airplane mode to get service,” wrote one user. “Any update on what’s happening with cellular service in Houston, Texas??? SOS all day….” A third confirmed, “Service KO’d in Houston.”

Meanwhile, as Hurricane Beryl hits Texas, millions of people along the coast and a few other areas are left without power, according to Centerpoint Energy, the area’s main provider.

Hurricane Beryl made landfall in Texas as a Category 1 storm early Monday morning, battering Houston with torrential rains and strong winds, and causing power outages for 1.9 million homes and businesses in the Greater Houston area as rapidly rising waters led to street flooding and rescue operations.

The company confirmed on X: “#HurricaneBeryl continues to move across the Greater #Houston area with heavy rain and strong winds, resulting in power outages. As of 8:30 a.m., more than 1.5 million customers are without power.
