BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – A man’s body was found “badly decomposed” inside a fridge in the garage of a northeast Bexar County home, Sheriff Javier Salazar said.
Salazar said a deputy was conducting a welfare check at a home Thursday in the 7500 block of Rustic Trail.
A man in his late 70s lived at the house, and his family had not seen him in some time, the sheriff said.
The deputy on scene made contact with someone on a Ring doorbell camera. The deputy believed that person was impersonating the man, Salazar said.
After reviewing the footage and determining that the voice was not that of the man, the family returned to the home with the deputy and gained access.
A man in his 40s, later identified as the man’s son, came out of the house. Salazar said it appeared that the man had been living inside the home.
Salazar said the family began searching the house and found a refrigerator inside the garage that appeared to be chained shut.
Upon opening the fridge, Salazar said the deputy observed what appeared to be “badly decomposed” human remains inside.
The son was taken into custody. Salazar said they were unsure if the man was murdered.
Family members told BCSO that they had not seen the victim for several months.
There is evidence the son had been cashing checks in the victim’s name, Salazar said.
Salazar said investigators expect to be on the scene for an undetermined amount of time as they work to determine how the victim died and if the son is connected to his death.
