Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to make appearances in Texas, at UT Austin

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are appearing at an “Our Fight Our Future Rally” at the University of Texas at Austin Tuesday. The rally is being hosted by UT’s University Democrats and will also have appearances from Texas Rep. Greg Casar, Beto O’Rourke and Texas Rep. Lloyd Doggett.

Casar is running to be the House Progressive Caucus chair, he confirmed to the San Antonio Express-News. The caucus is made up of more than 100 Congressional representatives who advocate for policies such as universal health care, debt free college and immigration reform.

The rally comes as Texas’ voter registration deadline is approaching on Monday, Oct. 7. In the 2020 election, turnout for voters aged 18-29 was at 41% compared to national turnout of an estimated 50%, according to research from Tufts University.

College Democrats at Texas State University are holding their own rally Tuesday afternoon with Sanders, Ocasio-Cortez, Casar and O’Rourke.

Following their appearance at UT Austin, Sanders, Casar and O’Rourke will also hold a rally Wednesday at The Millennium in Austin. They will be joined by Mike Siegel, who is running for Austin City Council.
