It’s undeniable: Week 1 of the 2022 high school football season was remarkable in almost every way. Familiar faces and new stars dominated gridirons across the greater San Antonio area.
What does Week 2 bring us? This time 14 games will be available to stream on the Big Game Coverage (BGC) app, including several matchups that could be playoff previews. Here’s a look at the four best games you can stream live on Friday night:
Lake Travis vs. No. 1 Steele, Lehnhoff Stadium, 7:30 p.m.
(KSAT)
This week, the top-ranked Steele Knights go head to head with one of the best teams in the state: Lake Travis. Sophomore quarterback Chad Warner lifted the Knights to a memorable victory over then top-ranked Brennan 35-34 in the final game of the KSAT Pigskin Classic with a game-winning touchdown pass to Royal Capell. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers were stunned by Arlington Martin in their season opener, but that was largely due to the absence of quarterback Bo Edmundson. It is unclear if the Michigan State commit will suit up Friday night, but Lake Travis is more than capable of running the ball effectively.
Lake Travis won the last matchup between these two programs back in 2017, 34-31. Expect another hard-fought battle when these two powerhouses line up against each other on Friday night.
Austin Westlake vs. No. 5 Judson, Rutledge Stadium, 7 p.m.
(KSAT)
After a wild, emotional overtime victory over Johnson in the KSAT Pigskin Classic, No. 5 Judson turns the page quickly to host a team that hasn’t lost a high school football game in nearly three years. The Westlake Chaparrals have won 41 straight games and three straight UIL State titles heading into Friday’s matchup. That run of dominance includes a 44-14 victory over Ridge Point in their home-opener last week. On the other sideline, head coach Mark Soto and the Rockets have aspirations of claiming a state title for themselves. This game will be a great litmus test to see if this year’s squad is up to the challenge.
“We know they’re a great team,” defensive back Myles Davis said. “Everybody knows who they are. We’re the underdogs most definitely, but coach told us today that we worry about ourselves, and we’ll get the job done.”
No. 12 Somerset vs. Southside, Southside ISD Stadium, 7 p.m.
(KSAT)
One of the city’s most intense rivalries will be renewed this Friday when the Cardinals host No. 12 Somerset in the Battle of 1604. Both programs enter this matchup having split their last four meetings. The Bulldogs won last year’s showdown 10-6 thanks to a memorable defensive performance against current Nebraska quarterback Richard Torres. Head coach Koy Detmer has Somerset firing on all cylinders early this season after a 42-14 victory over Highlands, but Southside also enters this game with a 1-0 record after torching Austin Crockett 59-12 in Week 1.
Something’s gotta give when these two teams go head-to-head on the gridiron, and if previous results are any indication, this year’s game will likely come down to the wire.
Eagle Pass Winn vs. Uvalde, Honey Bowl, 7 p.m.
(KSAT)
In Week 1, senior Justyn Rendon wore No. 21 and led Uvalde onto the field at Frank Carter Stadium in Carrizo Springs. The community came out in full force to support the Coyotes, and they responded by scoring a 21-13 victory over the Wildcats. Twenty-one points in honor of 21 lives lost.
This week, Uvalde football plays their first game at home in the Honey Bowl since the tragedy at Robb Elementary in May. Sports has traditionally helped society heal, especially at the high school level. Friday’s game represents that and so much more. Uvalde is planning on honoring the 50th anniversary of their 1972 state championship team, and if the Coyotes win, it would mark the 600th victory in program history. KSAT 12 Sports will be there to broadcast the entire game live on the BGC app. Sports Director Greg Simmons and anchor Larry Ramirez will have the call.
