(KXAN) — Severe storms began to move through parts of Central Texas late Friday and are expected to continue through Sunday with an increased risk of flash flooding.
According to projections, the main concerns would be lightning, large hail and damaging winds coming ahead of heavy and widespread rain.
Overnight Friday into Saturday, the KXAN First Warning Weather team said there were no reports of hail or damaging winds and a beneficial 1-2 inches of rain totals for many locations within the viewing area.
“The only weather threat overnight has been from lightning,” Meteorologist Rich Segal said.
According to the KXAN First Warning Weather team, rainfall rates could exceed 2″ per hour.
A Flood Watch was issued for all of Central Texas beginning 7 p.m. Friday through 8 p.m. Saturday with the potential to get extended into Sunday. A Flood Watch means conditions are favorable for flash flooding or stream, creek or river flooding during the watch period.

Austin Emergency Management issued a reminder that flooding can happen fast and does not take a lot to cause damage.
“Remember that water can easily move a concrete Jersey median, just think what it can do to your car! Please be cautious and think before driving into flood waters,” Austin HSEM said.

TxDOT said Flash flooding is possible. Steady rain is here and more is expected.
“Avoid low water crossings and other flood-prone areas and never drive into rushing or pooling water. Check road conditions at http://drivetexas.org,” TxDOT said.

Eastern Bexar, and portions of Guadalupe and Comal Counties will be most at risk of 30-45 mph wind gusts over the next hour or two.

Currently, only 5 low-water crossings are closed in the Austin area. There is high forecast uncertainty beyond this morning’s showers and thunderstorms. Check the forecast frequently for updates through the remainder of this weekend

AFD crews remain on-scene at one incident in the 9700 block of Rainlilly Lane monitoring for hot spots. Lightning caused extensive issues with electrical systems in a home and a fire between floors. Two adults were displaced.

All park trails in Pflugerville with low water crossings are closed due to flooding.
“Please stay safe and do not go around any barriers,” the city said.
8:05 a.m.
From 3 a.m. to 5 a.m. AFD said it responded to 4 structure fire incidents all caused by lightning strikes.

The NWS said additional periods of showers and storms are expected from this afternoon through Monday. Heavy rainfall and flooding will be possible in any of these additional activities. When/where additional storms form remains uncertain.

The NWS said the most widespread showers and s torms have pushed into the Coastal Plains. This is where the greatest flooding threat will reside over the short term.
“We continue to monitor scattered re-development to the west of these storms,” NWS said.
