A mass shooter reportedly opened fire near Roxborough High School in Philadelphia, injuring three people and killing one on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred around 4:30 p,m according to local police.
Three victims were transported to Einstein Medical Center and the fourth to Temple University Hospital. One of the victims, a 14-year-old, was killed in the assault.
The authorities believe the four victims are football players, according to local reports. It is not yet known whether they were students at the high school. Police are still investigating the events leading up to the shooting.
Investigators told reporters that the four athletes were walking off the field when the shooter opened fire from a Ford Explorer.
The suspects were reported to have fled the scene in the SUV. The shooting occurred hours after students had been dismissed for the day.
The shooting comes after reports of rising violent crime rates in Philadelphia. Axios noted that the “city has reported 388 homicides so far this year, up slightly from 384 the same time last year, when Philly set a record with 562 homicides.”
Shootings, in particular, have increased by 3 percent, according to the city. Law enforcement has not yet made any arrests in connection to this shooting.
