On June 20, 2022, Briones brought the unresponsive infant to Seton Hays Hospital, where she was later airlifted to Dell Children’s Medical Center. Despite medical efforts, she was declared brain dead days later. The medical examiner determined her death was a homicide caused by blunt force trauma to the head, with injuries indicative of child abuse.
Detectives Owens and Carasco led the investigation, obtaining search warrants, processing the crime scene, and interviewing Briones and family members. An arrest warrant for Briones was issued on June 28, 2022, by Justice of the Peace Beth Smith, Precinct 2. The investigation uncovered substantial evidence leading to Briones’ conviction on November 5, 2024. He is currently in the custody of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
