Jefferson County — The Texas Department of Public Safety says a driver is facing Intoxication Manslaughter charges in a fiery double fatality wrong-way collision on Highway 69 near mile marker 534 in Jefferson County, not far from the jail.

The preliminary crash investigation indicates that at 1:45 a.m. Friday, the driver of a Chevrolet pickup was traveling south in the northbound lane and struck a Toyota Scion head-on, causing the Toyota to erupt in flames and killing the driver and passenger.

The driver of the Chevrolet, identified as 51-year-old Salvador Gamez of Brownsville, was transported to a nearby hospital and is facing two counts of Intoxication Manslaughter, a felony offense.

The two occupants that were in the vehicle that was struck died at the scene. Justice of the Peace Brad Burnett ordered autopsies. Their names are not immediately available.
