SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police are investigating a crash that turned into a potential self-defense shooting early Thursday morning.
Officers said a 20-year-old man was driving a Toyota Tundra along Maple Valley Road, not far from Medina Base Road and Loop 410, before 6 a.m., when the driver crashed into a parked Toyota Corolla.

The owner of the Corolla, a 33-year-old man, went outside to see what happened and later found his car had been hit and was three houses down. He then confronted the driver of the Tundra, who had sat there for 30 minutes, according to SAPD.
Police said things escalated, and the Corolla owner shot the Tundra driver three times, once in the stomach and twice in the arm.
The Corolla owner claims he fired shots in self-defense as the Tundra driver was reaching for a gun during their argument, SAPD said.
“You have a right to protect your property, but also the safest thing to do anytime there is an accident or having a feeling something might escalate is to call the police department,” said Sgt. Robert Mount with SAPD.
The driver of the Tundra drove off but then stopped along the access road of Loop 410 and Medina Base Road. Law enforcement officials found him, and he was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Two weapons were recovered by police — one at Maple Valley Road and the other where the Tundra had stopped on the access road.
Homicide investigators will now determine if the shooting was justified.
