City of Dallas launches regional search for new Fire Chief

The city said this search is being conducted alongside a nationwide search for the city’s next police chief.

DALLAS — The City of Dallas officially launched its search for the next Dallas Fire-Rescue (DFR) Chief on Friday.

According to a news release from the city, City Manager Kimberly Tolbert announced that the search will be local and regional, as opposed to a nationwide search such as the current one underway for the city’s next police chief

“This search process is a pivotal step in ensuring we have the leadership needed to build upon the foundation established within Dallas Fire-Rescue and transcend the department into its next era of excellence and innovation,” Tolbert said in the news release. “The ideal candidate will be passionate about delivering Service First, Now! results, have a proven track record of building strong teams, fostering community engagement and driving operational efficiency.”

Tolbert believes the city will be able to finish its searches and fill the fire and police chief positions by early spring.

To execute the searches, the city contracted Public Sector Search & Consulting, Inc. (PSSC) to conduct the search for the two roles and maximize efficiency and cost savings, the city said.

“Utilizing PSSC to conduct both the Dallas Police Department and Dallas Fire-Rescue Chief searches provides our organization with consistency and a guaranteed pool of sought-after candidates that will produce visionary leaders,” said Dallas’ First Chief of Public Safety Dominique Artis. “DFR plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of Dallas residents and we are confident that we will identify a strong, responsive and qualified candidate to become our next Fire Chief.”

Chief Justin Ball is currently serving as interim DFR Chief after he was appointed to the role in June 2024. Whether or not Ball will be a part of the city’s regional search was not immediately clear.
