Both Dallas and Fort Worth grew, but Cowtown grew faster than Big D.

DALLAS — The city of Dallas slightly reversed its trend of population loss and kept its spot as the ninth most populous city in the country, according to recent U.S. Census data.

Dallas’ population grew from 1.29 million in 2022 to 1.32 million in 2023, an addition of roughly 5,510 residents according to the estimates released May 16. Despite the small increase, the city still has roughly 1,500 less residents in 2023 than it did in 2020.

The city was one of five in Texas listed among the most populous in the nation, and seven of the 15 cities that experienced the largest numeric growth in the country were also in the state. Fort Worth grew by 21,365 residents and saw the second largest increase in the country. The city is the 12th most populous in the nation.

With a nearly 27% increase, Celina is the fastest growing city in the country and experienced the ninth largest numeric rise. The city was one of the four Collin County cities listed among the fastest growing areas in the nation.

Overall, the Dallas-Fort Worth area saw the largest metropolitan population rise last year and surpassed 8 million total residents, according to a previous Census report.

Dallas County saw slight growth from 2022 to 2023 and added roughly 4,365 people in 2023, according to previous Census data. Although the county is the eighth most populous in the country, it also had fewer residents in 2023 than it did in 2020, a difference of about 5,000. The county also placed eighth for outflow and saw 34,330 people leave, up from the 18,985 residents who left in 2022.

Collin County added approximately 36,000 residents in 2023 and experienced the largest annual numeric growth in the country. Tarrant County, with an increase of roughly 27,300 residents, saw the ninth largest annual growth.
