City of San Antonio announces closings, adjustments for winter weather arrival

  

SAN ANTONIO – Before sub-freezing temperatures arrive, the City of San Antonio announced the closing of some facilities and scheduling adjustments for Tuesday.

Officials said some city employees considered essential to its function — such as police, fire, Public Works, Animal Care Services Enforcement, 311, and Homeless Outreach Teams — will be on duty and report to work as normal.

Non-essential employees who can work remotely will do so, the city said.

Here’s what will be closed and adjusted for Tuesday, Jan. 21.

Facilities & Administrative Offices

Closed

  • San Antonio Public Library locations, other than Central Library
  • Pre-K 4 SA Education Centers and Corporate Office, Head Start and Early Head Start
  • Bitters Brush site at 1800 Wurzbach Pkwy.
  • All Bulky Waste drop-off centers (Bitters, Frio City Road and Rigsby)
  • Household Hazardous Waste drop-off (Culebra)
  • Animal Care Services shelter
  • San Antonio Municipal Court 
  • All Metro Health clinics and offices 
  • Carver Community Cultural Center 
  • Alamodome Offices and Box Office  
  • La Villita and Market Square administrative offices 
  • Office of the City Clerk, including Vital Records
  • Culture Commons Gallery at Plaza de Armas 
  • Centro de Artes Gallery at Market Square 
  • Spanish Governors Palace 

All city meetings scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 21 have also been canceled, according to a city news release.

ADJUSTMENTS

San Antonio International Airport

  • The city said 26 flights were canceled Monday and 38 more flights set for Tuesday were also canceled.
  • The airport’s Flight Operations will continue to be monitored for traveler safety. Passengers are advised to check on their flight status before coming to the airport.

Solid Waste Management

Due to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, curbside collections are also happening a day later than normal.

Officials with the City’s Solid Waste Management Department say pickups are expected to begin around 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.Tuesday.

  • Regular Monday garbage, recycling, and organics collections move to Tuesday. 
  • Regular Tuesday collections move to Wednesday.
  • Regular Wednesday collections move to Thursday.
  • Regular Thursday collections move to Friday.
  • Regular Friday collections move to Saturday.

Animal Care Services

In addition to the closing of ACS’ shelter, partners such as San Antonio Pets Alive, Animal Defense League and Spay Neuter Network at the Paul Jolly Center will also be closed on Tuesday, the city said.

ACS staff will continue to care for pets on its campus. ACS officers will be able to respond to animal-related emergencies.

Resilience Hubs

The city designated six resilience hubs Monday that will provide basic needs and supplies, shelter, access to power and device charging and free Wi-Fi.

Officials said Central Library (600 Soledad Street; 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and the Walker Ranch Senior Center (835 West Rhapsody Drive; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) are two more places to stay warm during the day on Tuesday.
