Community concerns push San Antonio to pause metal recycling task force

SAN ANTONIO – The City of San Antonio has paused a metal recycling task force created last year, according to District 5 Communications Director Amador Salazar.

The task force was created to review Chapter 11 Fire Prevention and Chapter 16 Licenses and Business Regulations following months of widespread community concern over the safety of Metal Recycling Entities in San Antonio.

While there were a sufficient number of metal recycling representatives at meetings, Salazar said the task force was paused because not enough community-appointed members attended.

KSAT has contacted Development Services, asking how many community task force members have quit and why they made that decision.

District 5 said the city is working to ensure there are enough representatives and alternate members. A final decision on the task force will be made after feedback.

Community members told KSAT that some representatives left because they felt “unheard.”

The city previously said the committee would be expected to provide its recommendations to the Planning and Community Development Committee in early 2025.
