Cowboys getting punked at home again, trail Lions 27-6 at halftime

The Lions are getting their revenge for last December’s loss in Arlington.

ARLINGTON, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys won 16 straight home games over the course of 2022 and 2023. Once the calendar flipped to 2024, their ability to win on their home field has evidently evaporated.

The Detroit Lions lead the Cowboys 27-6 at halftime at Jerry World, on team owner Jerry Jones’ 82nd birthday, dominating the Cowboys in every phase of the game.

Dak Prescott threw a red zone interception for the second straight week, ending the Cowboys best threat to find the end zone. His pass to the back corner of the end zone, intended for CeeDee Lamb, was undercut by Detroit’s Brian Branch, who made a diving catch to pick it off.

And Sam LaPorta hauled in a 52-yard touchdown on a double-reverse fleaflicker that fooled the Cowboys defense, on the Lions way to a two-score lead.

The Cowboys led the game briefly, driving 54 plays on a game-opening nine-play drive, to set up a 34-yard Brandon Aubrey field goal. But Detroit firmly controlled the game from there.

A five-play 70-yard touchdown drive, featuring a Jared Goff deep ball to Tim Patrick, and a bruising 16-yard touchdown run from David Montgomery gave Detroit a 7-3 lead.

A Jake Bates 40-yard field goal made it 10-3, as Detroit capitalized on Prescott’s interception. Then LaPorta’s touchdown reception on the Lions trickery, built the lead to 17-3. A Detroit field goal with under 4 minutes to play in the first half made it 20-3.

Dallas was forced to go for it on a 4th & 2 from their own 38 yard line, and failed to convert on a throw from Prescott to Kavontae Turpin. Detroit took over with 2:39 left in the half.

Detroit would drive 38 yards in six plays after the fourth down stop, capped off by a Montgomery 1-yard touchdown run, to make it 27-3 at the break.

A late field goal from Aubrey, after a nice kickoff return by Kavontae Turpin established the halftime margin. Detroit has the ball to start the 3rd quarter.

The Cowboys have now been outscored 110-35 in the last four first halves at AT&T Stadium, dating back to the playoff loss to the Packers. 27-7 against Green Bay, 35-16 against the New Orleans Saints, 21-6 against the Baltimore Ravens, and 27-6 today.
