Crash at I-635 and President George Bush Turnpike kills one, closes most lanes to traffic

A crash at Interstate 635 and State Highway 161, also known as the President George Bush Turnpike, left one person dead and closed most lanes to traffic Wednesday afternoon, snarling traffic for evening commuters.

It was not immediately clear when or how the accident occurred, but Irving police confirmed one fatality before the scene was handed over to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The public safety department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

As of about 4 p.m., a Texas Department of Transportation dashboard showed all of the turnpike’s northbound lanes closed to traffic, as well as all eastbound lanes of the interstate except the exit ramp.

The transportation department’s traffic cameras showed motorists exiting 635 at McArthur and Olympus boulevards.
