Crash involving downed highway sign shuts down northbound I-45 in South Dallas

Northbound Interstate 45 in South Dallas is expected to reopen after crews worked throughout Friday afternoon to clear the highway of a multi-vehicle crash involving a downed highway sign, officials say.

All lanes are expected to open for rush-hour traffic, said Kenna Mitchell, a Texas Department of Transportation spokesperson. Mitchell said in an email about 4 p.m. that crews were picking up traffic controls.

The downed overhead sign, in the area of South Good Latimer Expressway, stretched across the northbound side of Interstate 45, traffic cameras from TxDOT showed.

Drivers were asked to avoid the area for much of Friday afternoon.

Mitchell has said that crews were moving the structure toward the inside lanes with hopes of allowing some traffic to flow through, but weather threatened the timeline of the cleanup.

An estimated four to five vehicles were involved in the crash, said Douglas Sisk, a sheriff’s department spokesman, in an email. Officials did not provide any additional information Friday afternoon, including details about any injuries.
