Dallas businessman running for Texas Comptroller says he would return any savings to taxpayers

DALLAS — The Texas Comptroller keeps the books balanced and writes the checks for the state of Texas. If money comes into the state, it flows through that office.

And that’s precisely why former State Senator and North Texas businessman Don Huffines wants the job. He says he wants eyes and ears on every dollar in the state of Texas to make sure it’s being spent properly.

“I was ‘DOGEing’ before ‘DOGEing’ was cool,” Huffines told us on Inside Texas Politics as he referred to his time in the state Senate from 2015 to 2019. “I’m not saying there’s a lot of crime in Austin or anything like that. I like to use this analogy: no one likes cleaning out the garage, but when you pull back in after you’ve done it, you feel pretty good.”

In addition to his political career, Huffines still owns Huffines Communities, a successful real estate development company in North Texas.

And he says that experience, as well as his time in the state Senate, will help separate him from his two announced opponents: now interim Comptroller Kelly Hancock, who resigned from the state Senate to get a leg up in the office, and Land Commissioner Christi Craddick.

“There’s a clear distinction now between the establishment, Bush-wing of the party and the MAGA wing of the party,” argued Huffines.

Huffines also claims that he is the only state senator in the history of Texas to never accept even a dollar from state government.

And he tells us if elected Texas Comptroller, he still won’t take a salary or even seek to be reimbursed for travel or other expenses.

“I don’t work for the government. The government didn’t hire me. I work for the people,” said the candidate.

Kelly Hancock has already appeared on Inside Texas Politics. We have also invited Craddick to join us on a future episode as well.
