Dallas Mavericks Assistant Coach Alex Jensen leaving to coach University of Utah basketball team

Jensen was a former star player at Utah. This move comes amid a number of trades and injuries among the Mavericks.

DALLAS — Alex Jensen, an assistant coach with the Dallas Mavericks, is leaving to coach the University of Utah’s men’s basketball team, according to ESPN reporters.

In a post on X, ESPN reporter Pete Thamel wrote that sources confirmed to him Jensen has accepted the job at his alma mater, where he was a former star player.

Jensen had been an assistant coach in the NBA since 2013, first with the Utah Jazz for 10 years before joining the Mavericks in 2023. He was also the head coach of the Canton Charge in the G League from 2011 to 2013.

This departure comes after a number of shakeups among the Mavericks, including the landmark trade of Luka Doncic last month.

As part of that trade, the Lakers’ Anthony Davis joined the Mavs. But he suffered an injury in his debut game on Feb. 8. It’s not yet known when he will be back.

The Mavs’ other star player, Kyrie Irving, suffered an injury as well, tearing his ACL, and will be out for the rest of the season.

Most recently, the Mavs signed former Los Angeles Clipper Kai Jones to make up for their recent loss of big men, which also includes Dereck Lively II and P.J. Washington Jr.

Another assistant coach with the Dallas Mavericks, Darrell Armstrong, is facing legal trouble after he was arrested last month on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Armstrong reportedly hit the woman with a gun and threatened to shoot her while they were having an argument.
