Dallas Wings re-sign Sevgi Uzun, Jaelyn Brown amid offseason of uncertainty

The Dallas Wings re-signed rookies Sevgi Uzun and Jaelyn Brown, securing their return as other key players are out the door.

DALLAS — The Dallas Wings have re-signed two rookie contracts in a key offseason for the franchise.

On Wednesday, the team announced that Sevgi Uzun, a guard entering her second year in the league, accepted the team’s qualifying offer, and will return to Dallas next season. The Turkish-born guard averaged 4.4 points and 3 assists over 40 games with the Wings, playing around 20.5 minutes per game.

Uzun is not the only re-signing for Dallas’ WNBA team. The Wings also re-signed rookie guard/forward Jaelyn Brown with a qualifying offer on Jan. 13, 2025. Brown only played in 14 games with Dallas and averaged 2.6 points on 48.4% shooting.

Both signings come during an offseason of uncertainty for the team. Two of the team’s best starters — Satou Sabally and Natasha Howard — are free agents this winter. Sabally, who the Wings picked up with the second pick in the 2020 WNBA draft, has already indicated she will not be back on the Wings next season. If Howard decides not to re-sign, Dallas will be without two key veteran Wings who put up an average combined 35.7 points per game.

Still, there is hope for the franchise. The Wings have a new head coach, a new GM and the first pick in the 2025 WNBA draft. However, with the franchise likely to select UConn guard Paige Bueckers with that first pick, the team will lack reliable scoring forwards.

In 2024, Dallas finished with the second-worst record in the WNBA, ending the season on a nine-game losing streak.
