DFW Weather: Widespread rain and storm chances in forecast for next week

Daily chances for more widespread rain and a few thunderstorms are in the 14 day forecast.

DALLAS — Key Takeaways:

  • Only a few showers Saturday night into Sunday with a chilly start to the week.
  • A warming trend arrives Monday through midweek, with highs reaching the 60s.
  • Better rain and storm chances return Wednesday and Thursday, with the heaviest rain likely southeast of DFW.
  • Beyond Thursday, the forecast is a little more uncertain, but rain could linger into Friday.

*Stay tuned for updates on the evolving rain chances and keep an umbrella handy!*

A somewhat unsettled weather pattern will take shape next week with multiple rounds of rain and/or storms expected through the next week. I’ll say this right away. No severe weather is in the forecast!

The system coming in will be the same one that brings much-needed rain to Southern California after the recent wildfires.

For us, it’s delivering some showers, a few storms, and a temperature rollercoaster. Let’s break it down day by day.

Saturday: A mostly dry day. Very low rain chance at night.

Saturday starts quiet, with temperatures near seasonal norms in the 50s to low 60s. By the evening, a weak cold front will approach North Texas, bringing in some light showers, mainly east of I-35. While instability is limited, there’s a small chance for a rumble of thunder overnight. This is not a day to be worrying about any outdoor plans.

Sunday: Chilly and Damp

Sunday will feel like winter’s brief return. Behind Saturday night’s cold front, highs will only reach the upper 40s in the western areas and the low 50s elsewhere. Scattered showers will linger, mainly south of I-20 and east of I-35, before tapering off by the afternoon. This will be the coolest day of the week, about 5-15 degrees below average, so keep the jacket handy if you’re heading out.

Monday and Tuesday: A Quick Warm-Up

After what will be a fairly cloudy weekend (mainly Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday) the sun makes a comeback Monday, and so do warmer temperatures. Highs will climb into the mid to upper 50s. By Tuesday, southerly winds will bring temperatures nearing 60°F. It gets even warmer leading up to our better rain chances. Rain chances remain low for now, but the increasing humidity will set the stage for what’s to come midweek.

Wednesday and Thursday: Better, more widespread rain chances return

As a slow-moving upper-level low treks toward Texas, expect rain chances to pick up again. Showers and isolated storms are possible both days. Again, severe weather isn’t likely, but some areas southeast of the metroplex could pick up close to an inch of rain.  These are the best chances of rain next week, so if you have any outdoor plans ESPECIALLY Thursday, make sure you start thinking of a back up.

Looking Ahead: Uncertainty in the forecast

While we know the weather will stay unsettled, the exact track and speed of the upper-level low remains uncertain. Depending on its placement and timing, rain amounts could vary significantly. Some models suggest widespread rainfall of up to 1-2 inches, while others suggest much less. We’re currently leaning toward the wetter solutions with 1-2 inches total expected for many through Friday. So this is not just one day… it’s an accumulation over six days. The highest totals are likely southeast of the metroplex.

Big Picture: A Welcome System

This upper-level low isn’t just bringing beneficial rain to Texas—it’s also helping California recover from recent wildfires by delivering decent rains. For North Texas, while totals won’t be dramatic, the rain will be helpful as we head toward February!
