Did you know? Every winter season brings snow to DFW

Triple digits are pretty much a guarantee every summer, but how often does it snow during the winter?

DALLAS — Dallas-Fort Worth might be best known for its sweltering summers and spring thunderstorms, but there’s one constant that may come as a surprise: every winter season on record has brought snowfall. Those records go back to the late 1800s! From just a trace of snow to significant accumulations, snow has found its way to DFW every winter.

This winter is no exception. As of right now, the DFW area has recorded 1.5 inches of snow , and this total will increase with more snow on the way.

A Look at Recent Snowfall Totals

While the DFW area is far from rivaling the snowfall seen in northern states, recent years have shown that measurable snow is a staple of the season. In fact, DFW averages around 1.7 inches of snow per season. Here’s a breakdown of snowfall from the past four winters:

  • 2023-2024: 1.5 inches (and counting)
  • 2022-2023: 1.3 inches
  • 2021-2022: 1.7 inches
  • 2020-2021: 5 inches

The winter of 2020-2021 stands out as a particularly snowy season, driven in part by the infamous February 2021 winter storm that paralyzed much of Texas. That storm brought heavy snow and record cold, leaving an indelible mark on the region’s weather history.

With more snow on the way, we’ll see where DFW ends up this season for a snow total but does look to be our first above normal season since 2020-2021.

For those wondering, the snowiest winter on record was 1977-1978 when 17.6 inches of snow fell throughout the season.
