Dirk statue roped off, graffiti power washed amid an outpouring of fan grief over Luka trade

After fans created a makeshift memorial outside the American Airlines Center, the Dirk Nowitzki statue was roped off.

DALLAS — Victory Park turned into a forum for grieving MFFLs Sunday morning.

News broke overnight that Luka Doncic was traded to the Lakers for Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a 2029 first-round pick. Shortly after, fans gathered near the American Airlines Center to express their disappointment through a growing tribute to Doncic laid at the feet of the statue honoring Dirk Nowitzki.

The crowd grew, culminating in a protest around noon with about 50 people expressing their disappointment over the trade.

Shortly after, crews started power washing graffiti left by mourning fans in front of the Dirk statue which reads, “Loyalty never fades away.”

The powerwashing didn’t deter fans who continued to amass tributes to Doncic in Victory Park on Sunday. One person went to far as to bring out a coffin to the American Airlines Center, mourning Doncic’s time in Dallas.
