SAN ANTONIO – District 2 Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez is calling for a new senior center in his district.

McKee-Rodriguez said the current center is old, small and lacks opportunities for seniors.

Earlier this year, the city acquired land adjacent to the Copernicus Community Center, which is expected to replace the current center.

“Our seniors built our community,” McKee-Rodriguez said. “They are the reason that it is the way that it is, and they deserve to continue having spaces where they can grow, where they can make friends and family, and continue making history. I’m excited to be a part of that.”

Building the new center could cost nearly $3 million, McKee-Rodriguez said.

The purchased land reportedly cost $750,000. Design and construction could cost between $1 million and $2 million.

McKee-Rodriguez said he hopes the center could be open by the summer of 2026.
