CANTON, Texas — An elderly East Texas woman was killed after a house fire in Van Zandt County last week.
Canton and South Van Zandt Fire Department crews both responded to the 27000 block of State Highway 64 in the Canton area around 5 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24. Over half of the home was full of flames when they arrived at the scene, Van Zandt County Fire Marshal Kevin Palmer said.
Firefighters went inside and pulled out the homeowner, Linda Jones, 75, out of the home, but she did not survive, Palmer said.
Palmer said the fire started in the garage, and it was determined that it was not arson. The cause of the fire is listed as undetermined.
According to her obituary, Jones was previously a member of the Canton Chamber of Commerce and she was once elected Woman of the Year. She was private about her faith, but she had a close connection to the Lord. She loved music, dancing, cooking and baking, but she loved her family more than anything in the world.
The family has set up a GoFundMe to assist with the funeral expenses. The fundraiser can be found here.
