Election Day: Congressional district races in Central Texas

  

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Several congressional district seats connected with Central Texas will be up for grabs in November. First, incumbents and challengers must get through Tuesday’s primary.

More than 17.9 million Texans are currently registered to vote, according to the Secretary of State’s office.

After early voting, more than 1.8 million votes have been cast, for a statewide turnout of 10.16%. Of all votes, about 67% have been in the Republican primary, while 33% have been in the Democratic primary.

Polls close at 7 p.m. in Texas.

Congressional Districts in Central Texas

District 10

Incumbent U.S. Rep Michael McCaul, R- Austin, is seeking reelection for an 11th term in the U.S. House. He serves as the chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs. He is facing a GOP primary challenge from Army veteran Jared Lovelace, from La Grange.

There are two Democrats in Austin in the race for their party’s nomination. Keith McPhail, a media industry account executive, and Theresa Boisseau, who works in real estate and is a former teacher.

District 17

Incumbent U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Waco, is running for the Republican nomination in hopes of serving a 14th year in Congress. Joseph T. Langone, R-Houston, is a truck driver, looking to challenge Sessions. Mark Lorenzen, D-Waco, is the sole Democrat running for District 17. He has been a pediatrician for the last 40 years and is committed to, “nurturing the next generation.”

District 27

U.S. Rep. Michael Cloud, R-Victoria, is running for reelection against multiple challengers. This district reaches southern Bastrop County and leads to the Texas coast. Luis A. Espindola, Scott Mandel and Christopher “Chris” K. Mapp are running against Cloud. Two Democrats, Tanya Lloyd and Anthony J. Tristan, are in the race for their party’s nomination.

District 31

Incumbent U.S. Rep. John Carter, R-Round Rock, is running for reelection against five GOP candidates including William Abel, John Carnan Anderson, Abhiram Garapati, Mack Latimer and Mike Williams. Three Democrats, Rick Von Pfeil, Brian Walbridge and Stuart Whitlow are working to get their party’s nomination.

District 35

Five Republicans including Dave Cuddy, Brandon Dunn, Rod Lingsch, Michael Rodriguez and Steven Wright are in the race to unseat U.S. Rep. Greg Casar, D-Austin. Casar will not face a primary opponent. One Libertarian, Clark Patterson, is in the race as well.

District 37

In the heart of downtown Austin, U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Austin, is running to keep his seat. He has served in Congress since 1995 and has two challengers in the primary, Eduardo Romero and Chris McNerney. The sole Republican in the race, Jenny Garcia Sharon, has faced Doggett in the last two election cycles.
