Ellis County school remained closed Monday, officials say

The school in Ellis County, which reported extensive damage in Saturday’s storms, was previously closed last week because of air quality issues, officials said.

MAYPEARL, Texas — A North Texas school that officials said was closed last week because of air quality issues remained closed Monday after severe storms and hail moved through the area Saturday morning.

Maypearl Primary School in Ellis County was closed Monday, the district announced. Ellis County is where officials reported a 42-year-old man who lived in an RV died in Ennis and several RVs and semi-trucks were blown over by strong winds on Saturday.

A Maypearl city official said in a statement to WFAA that the fire and police chiefs first ordered the closure of Maypearl Primary School because of air quality issues on Tuesday, March 4. The school is about 40 miles, or less than an hour’s drive, southwest of Dallas.

WFAA chopper footage of Maypearl Primary School Monday afternoon showed what appeared to be a carport fallen on a truck and damage to another nearby carport.

Shortly before 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Maypearl ISD said in a post on social media that roofers made repairs to the roof of the school Saturday.

“They inspected other sections and made repairs as needed,” the post continued.

In their announcement post to social media, Maypearl ISD did not specify whether storm damage or air quality issues were behind Monday’s closure.

WFAA has reached out to Maypearl ISD officials regarding plans for Maypearl Primary School for tomorrow. We’ll update this story as additional information becomes available.

A facility update on Maypearl Primary School is on the agenda for a special school board meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 12.
